Start with a clear specification.
Use these steps to plan your first enquiries. Keep your buyer’s requirements, quotes and checks together before committing to an order.
01
Understand the opportunity
Start with the customer and work back to the supply. Choose a leaf format and a delivery route before approaching suppliers.
Who would you sell to?
Define your buyer: a distributor, retailer, restaurant or another business. Record their product and delivery requirements.
What would you supply?
Specify fresh, frozen or dried leaves; whole or cut size; grade; packing; and order quantity. These details make supplier quotes easier to compare.
What needs checking?
Confirm demand, handling requirements, total delivered cost and destination rules before committing to an order. Rules for banana fruit should not be assumed to cover banana leaves.
02
Build your sourcing shortlist
Use the same questions with each supplier so you can compare the answers side by side.
Product and location
Record the supplier’s business identity, sourcing location and the exact product offered.
Order and delivery
Ask about minimum quantities, samples, packing, lead times and transport arrangements.
Evidence and follow-up
Keep dated quotes and record what has been checked directly. A listed contact alone does not establish supplier reliability.
03
Map the costs
A useful costing sheet separates the purchase price from all the other costs of fulfilling the order.
Purchase and preparation
Allow space for product cost, grading, packaging and local transport.
Delivery and other charges
Record freight, handling, applicable documentation costs and any other quoted charges.
Your selling price
Compare total costs with the proposed selling price. Keep assumptions visible and replace estimates with current quotes.
04
Prepare for buyer conversations
Before contacting a potential buyer, put the details they need in one place.
A clear product specification
Describe the product, packaging, quantity and delivery terms you can actually offer.
An organised enquiry
Ask about the buyer’s requirements, purchasing process and sample expectations.
A record of next steps
Keep track of enquiries, replies, quotations and the next agreed action.
