Compress Image for Shopify Store Speed

Optimize Shopify product photos, collection thumbnails, and hero banners before upload. Smaller images load faster, improve mobile experience, and help your store feel more polished without needing another Shopify app.

✓ 150KB product target ✓ Better mobile speed ✓ No plugin needed ✓ Browser-only

Shopify image limits vs recommended working sizes

Shopify accepts very large images, but that does not mean you should upload them unoptimized. According to Shopify Help, product and collection images can be up to 5000 × 5000 px and under 20 MB, but the practical target for a fast storefront is much smaller. If your product grid is loading 2MB originals, your collection pages feel slow even if Shopify serves them through a CDN.

Why pre-compress even though Shopify optimizes images

Shopify does optimize delivery, but your original upload still matters. Oversized uploads slow media workflows, create heavier source assets, and can still hurt performance in themes that request large variants. Pre-compressing gives you tighter control over quality and lets you keep a disciplined image library from the start. For product photos, JPEG around 80-85% quality is usually the sweet spot. For logos and flat graphics, PNG still makes sense.

How to optimize Shopify product photos (3 steps)

  1. Upload your product image above. If you are preparing a square catalog image, start with a clean, well-lit photo before compression.

  2. The tool is pre-set to a 150KB target with JPEG output. Click Compress and check that the product edges, texture, and color still look sharp.

  3. Download and upload to Shopify. Use smaller targets for collection thumbnails and slightly larger ones for hero banners or zoom-heavy product images.

Frequently asked questions

What image size is best for Shopify products?

Shopify often recommends high-resolution product photos, and 2048 × 2048 px is a common square size. But for file size, most stores perform better when the final compressed file lands somewhere around 100KB-250KB depending on image detail and whether zoom matters.

Should I upload PNG or JPEG to Shopify?

Use JPEG for most product photography because it is much smaller. Use PNG for logos, icons, and flat-color graphics where transparency or edge sharpness matters more than file size.

Can oversized product photos hurt Shopify speed?

Yes. Even with CDN optimization, heavy originals contribute to slower pages, especially on mobile. Pre-compressing keeps your store faster and your media library cleaner.
