Compress Image to 20KB Online

The 20KB limit is one of the strictest in Indian government recruitment — used for scanned signatures on Railway RRB, NEET, and dozens of state exam portals. Hit the exact limit in seconds, directly in your browser, no upload required.

Which portals require files under 20KB?

20KB is the standard signature file size limit across nearly all central government recruitment portals. Railway RRB boards, SSC, IBPS, SBI, and NEET all enforce a 20KB cap on scanned signature uploads. Even if your photo is allowed up to 50–100KB, your signature almost always needs to be under 20KB in JPEG format.

This tool uses a binary-search compression algorithm: it automatically finds the smallest quality level that keeps your file just under 20KB, so you get the best possible image quality at the exact limit.

Signature and photo size requirements by exam

Exam / PortalSignature LimitPhoto LimitFormat
RRB NTPC / Group D≤ 20KB≤ 50KBJPEG
RRB ALP / Technician≤ 20KB≤ 50KBJPEG
SSC CGL / CHSL / MTS≤ 20KB≤ 50KBJPEG
IBPS PO / Clerk / SO≤ 20KB≤ 50KBJPEG
SBI PO / Clerk≤ 20KB≤ 50KBJPEG
NEET UG (NTA)≤ 30KB≤ 200KBJPEG
UPSC Prelims / Mains≤ 30KB≤ 50KBJPEG

How to compress your signature to 20KB (3 steps)

  1. Scan or photograph your signature on white paper. Crop tightly. Upload using Choose File or drag and drop into the tool above.

  2. Target is pre-set to 20KB. Click Compress. The algorithm finds the exact quality level needed — no slider guessing.

  3. Preview the result. If the signature is still clearly readable, click Download and upload directly to your exam portal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my signature still be legible at 20KB?

Yes, for most scanned signatures. A typical signature image at 800×200px compresses to 20KB with very little visible quality loss. The key is that signatures are high-contrast black-on-white, which compresses extremely efficiently. The examiner will be able to verify your signature clearly.

The portal says "between 10KB and 20KB" — will this work?

Yes. Our tool targets just under 20KB, which satisfies any portal that sets a maximum of 20KB. If the portal also sets a minimum (usually 10KB), your signature will almost always exceed that minimum naturally.

Can I use this for photos as well as signatures?

Yes — the tool works on any image. However, 20KB is very tight for a full face photo. At typical exam photo dimensions (200×230px), 20KB will show visible compression. If your portal allows up to 50KB for photos, use our 50KB compressor instead.

What's the best format for signatures — JPEG or PNG?

JPEG. Almost all Indian government portals require JPEG format explicitly. PNG is lossless and cannot be compressed as aggressively as JPEG, so it will usually exceed 20KB for signature images. This tool outputs JPEG by default.
