NEET UG photo and signature requirements (NTA)

The National Testing Agency updates NEET guidelines each cycle. The requirements below reflect the current standard. Always cross-check the official NEET information bulletin for the year you are applying, as dimensions and limits occasionally change.

⚠️ Important: NEET photo must show your face clearly with a white or off-white background, taken recently (within 6 months). Glasses are not allowed. The photo must not be selfie-style. Use a studio or ask someone to click it against a wall.

Step-by-step: preparing your NEET photo

  1. Get a passport-size photo clicked professionally — white background, formal attire, no glasses. Ask for the digital file (JPEG) — studios will provide it on request.

  2. Upload the JPEG using Choose File or drag and drop. Target is pre-set to 150KB, which is safely within the 10–200KB range. Click Compress.

  3. Check the preview. Face should be clearly visible. Click Download and upload to the NTA NEET registration portal.

  4. For your signature: sign on white paper, scan or click a photo, crop tightly, and use our 30KB compressor to bring it under 30KB.

Frequently Asked Questions

My studio photo is 3MB — will compressing to 200KB damage it?

No. A 3.5×4.5cm photo at 300 DPI is about 500×650 pixels. At that resolution, 200KB gives excellent quality — you won't see any compression artefacts at normal viewing sizes. The NEET portal displays your photo at thumbnail size during verification; quality degradation is imperceptible.

Can I use a scanned photo instead of a digital one?

Yes. Scan at 300 DPI, crop to passport size (3.5×4.5 cm ratio), then compress here. Make sure the background is white and your face is centred. Avoid scanning at too high a DPI (600 DPI will produce very large files that you then need to compress more aggressively).

The portal rejected my photo — what could be wrong?

Common reasons: file size below 10KB (too small), wrong format (PNG instead of JPEG), background not white, face not centred, or photo older than 6 months. Make sure your file is in JPEG format and between 10KB and 200KB.

What about the thumb impression upload?

Use this same tool. Upload a clear photo of your left thumb impression on white paper, set the target to 40KB, and compress. The 10–50KB range for thumbprints is easy to hit.
