Compress Photo for GATE Application — 80KB, 240×320px

GATE uses the IIT GOAPS portal which requires a specific portrait-format photo: 240×320 pixels, under 80KB, JPEG only. It's different from most other exams — get it right the first time.

Official GATE photo and signature requirements (GOAPS)

GATE is conducted on a rotating basis by the IITs and IISc. The application is processed through the GOAPS (Graduate Online Application Processing System) portal. Note the dimensions — 240×320px is portrait orientation (taller than wide), unlike the 200×230px used by most other exams.

GATE also requires a minimum size of 3KB. Don't compress too aggressively — target 50–80KB and you'll stay comfortably in range. Your photo should clearly show your face with eyes open and looking forward.

How to compress your GATE photo (3 steps)

  1. Use a recent colour passport-size photograph with a plain white or light background. Your face must cover at least 50% of the frame. Avoid photos with shadows, sunglasses, or hats.

  2. Upload using Choose File. The tool resizes to 240×320px and compresses under 80KB in JPEG. Click Compress.

  3. Preview and click Download. Upload to the GOAPS portal. Keep the original file — you may need it again for admit card corrections or PSU recruitment that uses GATE scores.

Frequently asked questions

Why is GATE photo size 240×320 and not 200×230?

GATE uses a portrait (3:4 ratio) photo format while most other exams use a near-square 200×230px format. This is specific to the GOAPS portal used by the IITs. Using 200×230px will get rejected — always use 240×320px for GATE.

My photo is 1MB from the studio. Can I compress it directly?

Yes — upload the original high-resolution file. This tool resizes to 240×320px and compresses to under 80KB in one step. Starting from a larger original gives you better quality at the final compressed size.

Can I use my GATE photo for PSU recruitment?

PSUs that recruit via GATE scores (BHEL, GAIL, ONGC, etc.) typically have their own photo requirements. Check each company's portal, though the specs are often similar (200×230px, 50KB). Keep both versions ready.
